Project

Servizio di gestione integrata e sostenibile del ciclo acqua – energia nei sistemi di drenaggio urbano

Code PON01_02543
Field/s Energy, Environment and Ecology
Description Urban drainage networks are complex systems able to produce significant interferences with other types of systems and environments whose analysis and management often occur in a separate and not synergic way. The hydraulic load charged on storm water drainage networks is basically controlled by those areas of the urban texture that are directly and rapidly connected to the storm water collection system. The main types of directly connected areas, representing about 75-80% on average of the urban surfaces, are building roofs (40%) and paved areas used for traffic (35%) (roads, foregrounds and parking lots). The project aims at performing industrial research and experimental development activities in relation with the two types of land use mentioned above and the impacts of the associated pollution loads, also considering those aspects connected to the possible energy savings attainable within a sustainable approach to the integrated management of the complete system. The main objective of the project is the development of an integrated and sustainable management service for the water – energy cycle in the urban environment. To this aim, a technological platform will be developed, based on physically based numeric simulation codes, suitably integrated within a GIS environment, able to represent in details the complex phenomenologies associated to: hydrologic processes, in relation with the different types of land use; the hydrodynamic component related to urban drainage and the flow in the network down to the treatment plants; the quality aspects associated with pollutant loads transported by the flow and the thermal-energy aspects connected with the urban micro-climate. The main research themes proposed are: - Controlling the inflows into the drainage network: Reduction of total volumes that are generated on an annual basis (retention); Attenuation of the peak values and the overloading of the network (detention); - Controlling the generated pollution load: Abatement of the production of pollutants from the land surfaces; Reduction of the impact on the receiving water bodies; - Thermal-energy benefits: Controlling the urban micro-climate and reducing the energetic consumption in buildings; - Storm water potential for reuse: Optimizing water management for the maintenance of green areas (irrigation); Additional contribution to the control of inflows into the network (storage); - Technological Platform for the integrated management: Development of the numeric simulation models for both quantity and quality processes; Development of the decision and management supporting platform. The proposer companies intend to use the results of these researches for developing specific technologies related to the fields of expertise, and in particular: - engineered stratigraphy solutions for green roofs as for the building roofs (Zecca); - catch basin treatment devices for storm water (upstream the urban drainage networks) as for the roads, foregrounds and parking lots (S.M.& S. S.R.L); - platforms based on numeric simulation codes as a support to design (DHI Italia); - realization and management of sustainable urban drainage solutions in both qualitative and quantitative terms (Sering Italia S.r.l.) The most relevant innovative aspect of this project concerns the proposal of an integrated approach to the management of water and energy in the urban environment and the associated receiving water bodies, aimed at defining a service for the optimization of the use of the resources. This aspect is the basis of all components of the project, no one excluded, and the development of the associated research activities including the experiments in the field and the production of prototypes.
