IMPLEMENTAZIONE DI BIO-NANOTECNOLOGIE PER LA REALIZZAZIONE DI MANUFATTI INNOVATIVI IN PELLAME

Code PON01_02469
Field/s Environment and Ecology
Description The leather making process consists of a complex sequence of processes which transform animal skin, a by-product of the food industry, in valuable leather. Taken together, these processes, which are mainly chemical-physical and mechanical in nature, make a potentially degradable matter into a stable, useful with unique properties material. Although each tannery possess its own know-how which may slightly differ from other tanneries, the leather making process has developed during the last decades according to consolidated schemes. The efficiency of the processes is fairly low. It is mainly governed by diffusion mechanisms driven by concentration gradients. This means that, in order to improve the diffusion of chemical deep within the dermis and to speed the process up, usually an excess of chemical is employed. Nevertheless the net amount of chemicals that penetrate and react with dermis is still low. This brings in two major drawbacks: rinsing and draining liquids coming out of the tanneries are highly polluted; conventional technologies do not allow to use more complex macromolecular chemical which may improve the features of leather. Within this context, Italian tanneries and in particular those from Solofra, are struggling for being competitive with extra-European tanneries. For example labour and environmental costs hinder the development of Italian tanneries. This project aims at providing practical solutions to the above mentioned problems by using nano and biotechnologies to transport functional macromolecules, inorganic compounds and nanoparticles within animal dermis (or partially processed specimens) in order to modulate the chemical-physical properties of leather. In more details, the project aims at i. modulating specific properties of leather such as mechanical properties, hydrophilic/hydrophobic behaviour, antibacterial activity; ii. Exploiting enhanced transport mechanisms to insert molecular labels within the dermis in order to track the leather goods all over their life. Moreover, these technologies will be developed for pursuing the scope of finding novel and less harmful molecules, and of increasing the efficiency of the tanning process, by reducing the concentration of polluting agents with the draining and rinsing tanning fluids.
