Description	The project PROVACI “Technologies for seismic protection and valorization of cultural heritage” has a strong intra-regional feature as it involves public research institutions and private companies distributed over three Italian regions (Campania, Puglia and Veneto). It aims at developing sustainaible techniques and sound metodologies for the seismic protection, valorization and fruition of cultural heritage masonry buildings and archeological sites. The partners distributions on Southern (Campania and Puglia) and Northern (Veneto) regions allows ensuring also a strong link among parts of the country characterized by different financial point of views and different characteristics of basic materials (natural stones in the majority of Southern structures, artificial bricks in the North); this is a significant aspect assuring that the project will have a National impact on the partners and on public institutions. In response to the urgent need (as lately highlighted by the post-emergency management of the l’Aquila earthquake) the project starts from a vulnerability assessment aimed at analyzing the performance of buildings/aggregates of buildings and sites within a territorial context. In order to assess the vulnerability, an effort is made towards the definition of systematic methodologies of knowledge by means of geometric, material and structural survey supported by a strong interaction with monitoring and in situ tests. Then, the upgrade of structural performance is achieved developing strengthening systems based on innovative materials and techniques that are chemically, physically and mechanically compatible with existing materials and are in compliance with the driving criteria at basis of restoration works acceptable for Cultural Heritage Protection officers (such as reversibility, durability, low impact on geometric and structural existing configuration). The effectiveness of the developed techniques and metodologies will be proved by means of experimental tests on both elements and structures as well as by means of their application to real historical buildings and archeological sites. The unique facilities available at University of Naples and University of Padova will allow performing state-of-the art tests to validate seismic strengthening techniques on elements (plane panels, slabs, arches and vaults) and on prototypes of structures (dynamic tests on shake tables). As demonstrated by the supporting letters attached to the project, the availability and interest of several public end-users will allow the application of these techniques and metodologies to significant building and sites; these will represent the final and most significant steps of the project when it will be demonstrated that the proposed solutions can be accepted by Cultural Heritage Protection agencies and that they are cost-effective, environmental friendly, durable and easy to install and monitor over time.
