Description The project aims to develop innovative energy cycles for the agro-industrial sector, thanks to flexible systems of small size for the energy self-production from gas and sun. Biogas and syngas are produced from agro-industrial waste. Energy is produced with small size cogeneration systems with high efficiency. The project pursues a strategic goal and focuses on the development of agro-industry energy through the achievement of a coordinated variety of technological results. The overall strategic objective is the development of innovative renewable energy systems integrated in an intelligent network (Smart-Grid) for the decentralized and diffuse production of electricity and heat with high conversion efficiencies at low power scale. The specific objectives are: • self-sustainable energy production; • experimentation of ultra-short cycles from the recovery of agricultural and agroindustrial waste biomasses and from the sun; • high efficiency micro-CHP on a low power scale from 1 kW to 100 kW. The agro-industrial business partners are involved in production, sorting and processing of biomasses and, at the end of the project, in the implementation of a parametric anaerobic digester, a gasifier, small cogeneration systems and in integration and testing of these systems all together. For the treatment of wet and non-wood biomass, the project will develop a novel small size and parameterized digester for the production of biogas. In parallel it will be developed an innovative gasifier to produce syngas with a high content of hydrogen from woody biomass. In close collaboration with all OdR, the digester will be developed by SteelTech and the gasifier will be realized by Varat and Me.Ca.Pollino. These companies are indeed interested in the subsequent industrialization of these systems. Cogeneration from solar energy and biomasses on the scale of a few thermal kWs and 1 electric kW will be produced by a Stirling converter with very high efficiency (33% electric). This converter is produced by an European company (Microgen) and it is already available at industrial scale. Originally developed and implemented in traditional gas burners, this Stirling system will be now adapted to biogas burners, a solid biomass burner and used in a solar concentrator (SunDish). The partnership, through Innova Solar Energy, has an exclusive specific agreement with manufacturer for the development and subsequent industrialization of new cogeneration systems based on this thermodynamic converter. Always in close collaboration with research institutions participating in the project and again in the optics of future industrialization, the company Ungaro will implement a new type of solid biomass cogeneration boiler with integrated Stirling, and Innova Solar Energy a cogenerator with a two-axis solar tracking. The project includes, inter alia, advanced stages of purification and separation of biogas and syngas and their subsequent storage via a new family of nano-structured materials developed at University of Calabria. It is also planned the final testing of purified biogas in internal combustion engines and purified syngas in small fuel cells. All proposed innovations are based on recent well established know-how and patents (f.i. patent UniCal n. CS2007A000031 and patent Innova n. CS2008A00017) at the top edge of current technical/scientific knowledge and all available to the Partnership. Moreover the project plans a further important activity of knowledge codification to build a solid patents portfolio to strengthen the successive stages of industrialization for all the developed systems. The new and integrated small energy systems proposed by this project represent a great innovation in the global energy market and they are also suitable outside the chain of agro-energy, in all cases where the energy self-sustainability, high conversion efficiency and large distributed energy generation are priorities
