Description	The R&D Project Hi-Life is aimed at facing and solve specific needs raised by f SMEs operating in the field of dermo-pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, health/dietary supplements and food-processing, based in two Regions of South Italy (Regioni della Convergenza): • to enhance technological up-grading of the industrial processes and products of the involved SMEs; • to improve and reconvert the business plan of the SMEs, currently targeted to the production of low technology products, delivered to third industrial counterparts, toward products with high economic value added (EVA); • to strengthen the specialization of the human resources and to promote research actions for enhancing product safety and quality; • to develop suitable industrial technological strategies for increasing the competitiveness of such SMEs; • to amplify the current product portfolio of agro-processing SMEs toward health- and wellness-promoting innovative products; • to enhance the expansion of SMEs from a regional economy to an international market venue, by training specialized personnel with specific technical-scientific and managerial skills and expertise; • to develop technological platforms for the production of innovative value-added products and, simultaneously, to reduce the quantity and environmental impact and of food waste. The rationale of the Hi-Life Project is to implement a strong collaborative link among the involved SMEs, providing the raw materials, the academic R&D expertise (Universities) and the final stakeholders (consumers, agro-food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries). The R&D activities of the Hi-Life Consortium will be focused on the exploitation of by-products and waste derived from milk, olive oil and citrus industries, localized in the RdC, to develop innovative value–added products, through the integration of scientific-technological research expertise from University with the production know-how of SMEs, with the final goal to strengthen the scientific-technological potentiality of the partner SMEs, and to promote and speed-up the technological innovation requested by the partner SMEs of the RdC area. As suggested by its acronymous, the Hi-Life Project is also aimed at contributing significantly to maintain and enhance human health and to prevent chronic human diseases. Other significant objective of the Hi-Life Project are: • generation of procedures and technologies for quality control of agri-food (especially milk, olive oil and citrus-derivates); • development of suitable technological tools for the identification/traceability of food products in every step in a process chain e for targeting them either to a specific industrial pipe-line or toward specific consumer category; • exploitation of by-products and waste of the agro-processing industries as source of bioactive molecules; • reutilization and exploitation of agro-industrial by-products and waste, through the development of technological model platforms for the production of health-promoting products (functional food and nutraceuticals), capable to modulate basal human physiological processes; • production special food targeted to specific consumer categories; • application and transfer of the developed innovation model platform to other PMI operating in same production chain. Integrative part of the Hi-Life project is the training program, aimed at providing professional specialized training (Masters, Advanced Courses) to employees of the involved private skateholders or to create new professional figures, to broaden and strengthen their technical and managerial skills in the field of reutilization and exploitation of agro-industrial residues and by-products.
