Project

TASMA - Tecnologie Abilitanti per Sistemi di Monitoraggio Aeroportuale

Code PON01_02876
Field/s Transport and Logistics
Description The goal of the present project is the industrial research needed to develop and to optimize the enabling technologies oriented to the manufacturing of microelectronic and microelectromechanical components for receive/transmit of microwaves that constitute the answer to requirements of broad band, high power, high data rate, high integration, and moreover to the manufacturing of the related packaging for the specific application. The future of Monitoring Systems of the space area in an airport, following the indications from reference market, lies in the realization of multifunction radar system of a new concept, based on antenna arrays that are electronically active and managed through the phase of the source signal (MPAR = Multifunction Phased Array Radar) because this kind of radar could replace five different type of radar that are nowadays extensively utilized: the Mechanically Rotating Conventional Radar, the Air Surveillance Radars, the Air Route Surveillance Radars, the Terminal Doppler Weather Radars and the Weather Forecast Surveillance Radars known as NEXRAD. That capability is bound to the possibility, that is own of MPAR systems, to define by means of digital beamforming of the RF signal, more then a beam so that each beam has a control of the aperture and of declination of the major lobe of the radiation pattern so that is possible to follow different targets with a beam digitally formed for the specific target. The development of MPAR systems asks for the set-up and optimization of a few new enabling technologies either at the component level either as system integration. The present project has the goal of development of the following technologies: 1)Technologies for design, simulation, manufacturing of for back Side active devices with broad band and high transmission power that would become the state of the art for high power microwave devices for MMIC HPA; in particular back side technologies for HEMT devices made of GaN/AlGaN epitaxial thin films on substrate like Silicon Carbide and Silicon with low thermal resistivity. 2)Technologies for design, simulation, manufacturing and testing of complex components needed to the phase shift control of reconfigurable antenna arrays that are the core of an MPAR Radar, in particular a 5 or 6 bit phase shifter based on RF switches made with MEMS technology and that operate with very low insertion loss and very high RF isolation just to a frequency range of Ka band; also that components would become in a near future the state of the art reference to switching devices that are integrable in MMIC 3)Innovative packaging technologies of the RF active and passive devices developed as seen before, and then packaging on ceramic substrate with very high thermal conductivity for active components with broad band and high transmission power, including also packaging with multilayer boards based on HTCC AlN ceramic; microelectronic 0-level packaging for complex passive components aimed t the control of the phase of the microwave beam with a technology able to integrate the device on RF boards and low cost packaging based on flexible polymers aimed at devices with less tightening requirements in terms of power dissipation.
