Description

MATRECO proposal will research new materials based on advanced technologies and develop an appropriate manufacturing process in order to target the production of components/structures functionalised to increase final customer satisfaction (more value, same price) and characterised by an outstanding environmental sustainability (use of easy renewable resources and of near-zero carbon lifecycle processes, from raw material extraction to final recycle/reuse/disposal, without any negative compromise in quality and in technical content/performance given to customer).
MATRECO will demonstrate results through directly developing real pilot applications relevant for several sectors: automotive, trains, nautical, furniture and packaging. Indirect benefits will arrive by an even more extended field of application of developed materials: motorcycles, aeronautics, domestic appliances, textiles, buildings.
Most innovative aspects of MATRECO come from results achieved after developing 4 research areas:
eco-sustainable materials: structural composites based on biopolymers and/or recycled plastics and reinforced by using vegetal fibres;
engineered structural materials for structures with tailored properties, optimised by appropriate processing technologies: hybrid structures based on composites / metallic foams / local heat/surface treatments;
treatments for surfaces functionalization (polymers, textiles, dies): plasma/chemical processes to give to materials novel functionalities for aesthetical interiors/structures through convenient and environmental friendly processes: protective coatings, self/clearing, anti fog, water/oil repellence, low friction surfaces.
5 demonstrators will be developed based on the innovations achieved by appropriate integration of materials and treatments: automotive inner door panel, structural panel for trains, interiors for nautical sectors, panels for furnishing, biopolymers packaging solutions.
The consortium includes Research Centres (Università di Catania, ENEA-materials, Università della Calabria, ITM CNR, Università di Napoli Federico II, Università di Bari, CRF), big companies from automotive (CRF, Adler, Tiberina) and railway sectors (Firema), SMEs from nautical sector (Seal Marine, Mistral Borrone), furnishing (SIrianni e Cosmob) and packaging (Filadel) able to exploit research results in new products to increase shares in their market sectors.
