SIBSAC - Sistema integrato per la bonifica e il trattamento di sedimenti e acque contaminate ad elevata salinità

Code PON01_01844
Field/s Environment and Ecology
Description Wastewaters contaminated by xenobiotic compounds, generated by various sources and subsequently discharged into the marine environment create a major ecological problem throughout the world because of the persistence and accumulation of these compounds. The sediments become a sink and source of toxic components due to their resuspension and can be one of the largest potential sources of risk to water quality. The high amounts of contaminated sediments requiring dredging for the purpose of maintaining or restoring coastal and harbour areas thus claim for technically reliable and cost-effective management strategies. This issue is particularly significant in the Augusta-Priolo industrial Area, one of the largest Italian and European petrochemical area that has been in operation since 1954. The main goal of this research project is to propose an integrated treatment plant including physical, chemical and biological phases for the removal of contaminants from sediments and marine wastewaters. This goal will be purchased through bench scale and pilot scale plants whose implementation will be the main research and industrial result. Since few low cost contaminants treatment processes are available for sediments and very few technologies are evaluated on the same sediment, there exists significant research demand for further development. In this context, sediment washing is here proposed with the main target of removing organic and inorganic contaminants also from the more highly contaminated finest fraction. Sediment washing involves the addition of a solution to the contaminated sediments and the transfer of the contaminants from the sediments to the wash solution. Various additives will be tested during the research and extraction tests will be conducted to determine optimal conditions (chemical type and dosage, contact time, agitation, temperature and extraction steps to meet regulatory requirements). If compared to other treatment processes, the advantage from the application of sediment washing is that relatively simple technology is involved and cost can be reduced by the recovery of the additives. Wastewater deriving from sediments washing will be treated in the water treatment line, together with wash-waters originated from the cleaning of ships’ fuel tanks (slops) and bilge waters. Beside the presence of refractory compounds, these waters show extremely high salinity levels (up to 35.000 ppm), that limit the possibility of discharge to sewers and address the disposal to the sea with the need of higher treatment performances. The process will include preliminary pretreatment by coagulation, GAC and BAC adsorption followed by a membrane bioreactor. Batch and column filtration tests will aim to characterize the proper GAC or BAC system, the adsorption kinetics and the isotherms, and to gather preliminary information on the required contact time and backwashing frequency. Biological regeneration has been widely explored for several organic contaminants in Activated Carbon Biological filters (BAC). However these systems can show several operational difficulties including hydraulic short circuiting and excessive headloss build up. As an alternative the offline biological regeneration (OBR) of GAC will be investigated still utilizing the regenerating abilities of microorganisms with the aim to reduce the need for intensive thermal regeneration and associated costs. Closed loop recirculating batch tests will be carried out, through bench and pilot scale plants, to verify the potential for bio-regenerating the saturated carbons through the addition of bacteria selected on purpose. Specifically the ability of bacteria to resist to salinity and refractory compounds to be degraded will be investigated. The performance of a parallel natural treatment (constructed wetlands) will also be investigated on the considered wastewaters as well as a monitoring system to control air emissions of the entire treatment plant.
