Description Focusing on the development of tecnologies, devices, power modules, power applications and module prototyping line, Ambition Power covers the field of Energy and Energy Saving due to the high impact of power electronic convertion efficiency in all energy consumption scenarios. Electrical energy consumption represents the 40 % of the worldwide energy needs and its 55% is required by motor control application. Only this sector shows over 30% over potential power saving with relevant ambiental and social impact. Ambition Power will act on the aspect of Transformation and Use of the energy. New devices, based on GaN and SiC technology will be developed. They overcome Silicon devices thanks to their intrinsic lower losses and to the ability of operating at high frequency and high temperature. These factors allow higher efficiency, reduced system size and the removal (or reduction) of the auxiliary cooling system with relevant impact on the needs of auxiliary energy and added material. So a more rational use of energy and better sustainability of applications can be assured. Moreover, Ambition Power will focus on the optimization of Power modules as well. New technology of assembling and interconnection of the single components in the power module will be developed (packaging) throughout innovative materials characterized by high thermal conductivity and chemical stability. The above studies will allow also to minimize the entity of parasitic components, the related energy losses, the high frequency interferences, the electromagnetic emission (EMI) and the radiative surfaces. These must be compatible with the improved performance of active device they have to accomodotate introducing techniques for high temperature and high frequency. Finally the system architectures will be reviewed in order to avoid the pick and place procedure that can result in sub-optimal explotation of the new technology. So, a new architecture will be analysed in order to maximize the global system performance improvement. Ambition Power will exploit a large number of partners, leader in the power convertion area with several public institutions placed in Sicily and Puglia. Moreover a “Progetto Formativo” will be developed with the the formation of 12 Students at PhD level, distributed in the three areas of, Module Technologies, Semiconductor Technologies and Applications. Ambition Power will reinforce the industrial strength of its partners and it will contribute to increase the local knowhow and excellence in the field of Power Convertion assuring high innovation development in one of the most competitive and growing market.
