Description The use of composite materials, with carbon fiber reinforced and thermoset or thermoplastic matrix for civil transport aircraft is continuously increasing. That is due mainly to weight reduction, which gives advantages in terms of fuel consumption, and consequently with minor CO2 production, and a better aircraft performance, with an increase of maximum range and/or payload. The use of composites progressively was extended from secondary to primary structures, with more critical applications. A very qualified example is the new Boeing wide body aircraft 787 Dreamliner, whose fuselage, as well as the wing, are made of composites, as well as the new Airbus A350, presently being developed. In order to increase the advantages obtained through the utilisation of composite materials a cost reduction is needed, to be performer through production processes peculiar of composite materials, namely the ones based on integrated processes and/or the ones starting from separated matrix and reinforcement (infusion). In fact that allows to use cheaper raw materials, without using expensive intermediates (prepreg). A further advantage can be obtained through the use of multifunctional composites, having both structural properties and same other property (e.g. conductivity), with an improvement by the system point of view. This research project is aimed to perform innovative structural solutions to be applied for the wing structure of a regional transport aircraft. The resulting know how increase, finalised to solve specific structural issues, together with the cost reduction issues, will produce a competitivity increase in the regional transport aircraft market for Alenia and its supply chain. The project will investigate innovative structural solutions for the wing of a regional transport aircraft, starting from the material properties with a “scale up” approach through details, subcomponents, up to full scale components. Static and fatigue resistance will be investigated, as well as impact and environmental damage. The project will also study fabrication and assembly processes, which will be validated through full scale representative items. The issues of realization of integral part, and alternative production processes (like infusion) will be considered, as well as multifunctional structure issues. The main goal will be the cost-weight optimisation. The project will involve the complete supply-chain, including material supplier, and research institutes.
