Metodologie innovative di sviluppo di motoptopulsori automobilistici

Code PON01_01517
Field/s Transport and Logistics
Description The proposed Research Program plans to define, develop and validate methodologies and models for calculation, design, control, testing and diagnosis to be used within engine and gearbox development process for automotive application. Powertrain systems currently in production or on development are characterized by a growing complexity, both as increase of functions and number and type of control and regulation parameters. As regards the first aspect an example are devices for electrical end mechanical energy management, diagnostic functions or powertrain management on request of other vehicle electronic systems. As regards the second aspect, new devices are present together with the traditional control parameters (spark advance and throttle): variable valve timing (VVT), variable valve actuation (VVA), turbochargers with growing complexity, etc. These and others new functions require much more time and resources than in the past during the product development and industrialization phases. Furthermore the complexity of the electronic devices for management and diagnosis is growing more and more. On the other hand the automotive market imposes reducing development time, while the needs for cost reduction limits the possibility for an increase of resources. For these reasons it is not possible to rely on traditional processes and methodologies, where: • development and validation of powertrain and its components are mainly based on testing, among all the operating range; • calculation is especially used in order to find the limit operating conditions, for reliability purposes; • control and diagnosis strategies are based on maps designed to control a single actuator using a single sensor signal, computed through long calculation chains and calibrated using trial-and error approach, which normally is not based on the dynamic model of the controlled process, with time and cost consuming test sessions; • on-board diagnostic systems work at subsystem level because they are not designed on a complex model basis, hence they are inadequate because the controlled subsystems interact one another and malfunctions can propagate. For these reasons the new processes and methodologies which are intended to be developed within this Research Program must: • Be able to manage the complexity of the phenomena to be controlled, in terms of different aspects and variability; • Be a standard, i.e. they must be able to be used for several kind of project and product with minor variants, managed by different work groups in different Countries contemporarily; • Designed for a dramatic reduction of the number of tests needed, thanks to a good simulation of reality, through “virtual testing”; • Be used for different purposes; • Control structures shall be: model-based, in order to fully exploit the dynamic links between the acting elements, multi-variables in order to increase the information base used by the control strategies, with re-configuration capability in case of fault; optimized with respect to targets of performance, fuel consumption and emissions; robust with respect to model uncertainly and production variability and disturbances; tolerant to faults and malfunctions; capable of self-configuration in a certain measure.
