Description The south Italy industrial tomato chain has certainly been the main success maker registered at international level by the “made in Italy”: it deals with productions that have been able to match with the tradition and the intrinsic high quality perception. Nevertheless even if the market customs and demands are deeply changed in the direction of higher service contents, these products have preserved their commercial aspects unchanged. In the meantime the industrial tomato chain has to solve the problems of industrial wastes which actually constitute, for their high costs, the main critical point even at economical level. The project aim to study the whole industrial tomato chain, starting from the agronomic optimization, to the transfer of products linked to tradition in innovative packaging (plastic, aluminium, etc.), through an industrial technological optimization aimed to adapt the new packs to maintain the status quo processing. In addiction the tomato wastes valorisation represents the biggest problem still to solve (the most important part of innovation are the separation conditions of peel and seeds from wastes, the oil extraction from tomato seeds for fuel and cosmetic use, the supercritical fluids extraction of molecules biologically active).The expected result from this study is to obtain different tomato products linked to tradition with real industrial processing and quality standardized. This project intends: 1) bringing back SME to economical competitiveness condition; 2) creating a whole industrial processing able to obtain standard high quality products; 3) optimizing the technological innovation needed to obtain the above-mentioned results and a global energy saving as well; 4) creating new types of products much more respondent to nowadays market requests and able to create bigger International markets, 5) valorising the tomato wastes from the industry.
