Dal nutraceutico al farmaco per strategie integrate “NUTRAFAST”

Description Nutraceutical, a term combining the words “nutrition” and “pharmaceutical,” is a food or food product that provides health and medical benefits, including the prevention and treatment of disease. The present project is named “NUTRAFAST” and aims to bring together the industry world and the Academia expertise for biomedical research. Small, medium and big companies in the field of chemistry, biotechnology and food will work with the Academia to develop new nutraceuticals with a certified skill in terms of efficacy and side effects coming from in vitro and in vivo testing, using animal models and human. New diagnostic tools will be developed for a reliable and fast determination of specific biomarkers. Moreover, new delivery systems will be developed to enhance bioavailability and biological efficacies (that is, antiinflammation, anti-cancer, and so on) of different nutraceuticals. The NUTRAFAST projects is composed of six final aims. The first four aims are related to the different potential nutraceuticals under investigation. Aim number five will focus on the development of diagnostic tools, either molecular and/or biochemical, to screen for the nutraceutical potentials supporting aims 1- 4. Aim number six is devoted to the design and production, on an industrial pilot scale, of innovative delivery systems. Regarding the potential nutraceuticals, olive oil will be explored as source of innovative biological active molecules with anti-inflammatory and anti-degenerative actions. Functional foods may also come from milk and milk-derived (serum) products, in the form of food or beverage with enhanced pharmaceutical effects (anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatory) to be tested in animal models and humans. Aim number three is devoted to industrial production processes of relaxin as nutraceutical (extraction from natural sources, product of chemical synthesis, biotechnological product), to the biochemical characterization and biological activity, using in vitro and in vivo assays. Betaine-based compounds are the main topic of aim number four. Oral delivery system will be designed for the slow release of synthetic nutraceuticals derived from betaine. Pharmacodinamic and therapeutic effects of these new compounds will be evaluated in an in vivo model of obstructive pathology of the inferior limbs. Moreover, inflammatory cellular models will be employed to screen for gene expression pathways involved.
