Description NEUROSTAR is a multidisciplinary, multicenter project purported to design and develop innovative research, technologies and devices suitable of application and able to: - support pre-clinical or otherwide early diagnosis; - support protocols for the early prediction of outcome; - characterize quantitatively the functional impairment, residual abilities and potentialities of recovery; - identify and describe the functional conditions favoring spontaneous recuperation and neuro-rehabilitation; - identify and experimentally validate novel paradigms for the sensory-motor-cognitive neuro-rehabilitation; - design and implement novel robo-mechanotronic devices and/or advanced nanotechnologies to compensate for the functional impairment and/or support neuro-rehabilitation in dedicated units or in remote at home; - design/apply advanced artificial intelligence algorithms to be used in the identification of objective diagnostic/prognostic criteria and integrated systems/procedures supporting decision in the medical domain; - implement advanced informatics or ambient intelligence systems recording/managing large datasets to monitor online clinical/functional conditions, circadian/ultradian rhythmicities/cycles, and spontaneous or condition-dependent fluctuations, in subjects with degenerative and progressively invalidating disorders of the central nervous system (Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s dementia, multiple sclerosis) or with acquired brain damage (mainly stroke or trauma) resulting in severe, persistent functional impairment (vegetative or minimal conscious states, hemiparesis, severe posttraumatic conditions, etc.) suitable of sensory-motor-cognitive neuro-rehabilitation. The multidisciplinary innovative approach to research and the development of advanced and flexible systems/devices will provide new knowledge on the pathophysiology of disorders of the central nervous system that are relatively common, severely invalidating and at high healthcare and social cost. The obtained knowledge will be used to design and validate protocols and paradigms improving the overall care and neuro-rehabilitation, limit hospitalization needed for neuro-rehabilitation, promote/favor the subject’s evolution towards brain conditions of increasing functional complexity and responsiveness, retard functional worsening, compensate for disablities interfering with the subject’s everyday life, spontaneous recuperation or neuro-rehabilitation. The project major advantages are: - the development and application to medicine and neuro-rehabilitation of advanced robomechatronic devices, nanotechnologies and artificial intelligence algorythms; - the developement of systems based on interacting robomechatronics and virtual/augmented reality; - the extended application to tele-rehabilitation procedures/programs; - the acquisition/handling/analyses of large database with clinical or pathophysiological relevance.
